The concept of antique furniture hardware mainly lies in the production process to make the product. The production method of antique furniture hardware normally were crude, and literally made in a rough process. Basically the original concept in making antique furniture hardware is crafting the furniture from iron and brass to make two wooden parts to function as one unit, so in other words it was crafted in such a way to make a final product from wooden parts. Normally antique furniture hardware were made and crafted by small shops or local blacksmith. And usually the design for antique furniture hardware are fairly simple and do not have many variations.
However the revolution, especially in the industrial sector, brought a groundbreaking change both to the manufacturing process and manufacturing capacity per production. The production pattern started to change from a localized shop owned by local blacksmith to an urban manufacturer for hardware. The change bring a major change to the production of antique furniture hardware, not only in term of the production process but also in term of the design. Because it was manufactured in a considerably larger scale than before, the production design of the furniture hardware's started to became more uniform.
The uniformity came as the result of the standardization made by the manufactures. So in general the pattern were shifted from antique furniture hardware made for small market into a standardized production made for a larger market. Not many vintage and traditional design are still in production right now, because company seek for a more uniformity in design to cut their production costs. The vintage design and traditional manufacturing process started to moved away from the market to compete in a larger market and provide the market with a new modern design and continuous innovation. In general, it is getting harder for us to find an authentic antique furniture hardware in the market.
